The Shared History Project is a groundbreaking initiative by the Leo Baeck Institute, that explores 1700 years of Jewish life in German-speaking lands through the lens of 52 iconic objects. It interweaves artifacts and essays to chronologically narrate the history of Jewish communities and their integral connections to the regions and cultures of Central Europe.
The project’s design captures the essence of these stories, across a digital exhibition, social media platforms, and a traveling display to underscore the critical role of historical understanding in combating prejudice and promoting inclusivity.
Each object not only serves as a portal to the past but also addresses contemporary themes such as migration, inclusion, exclusion, and resilience—issues that remain deeply relevant today–demonstrating how artifacts can teach universal lessons and inspire new scholarship, while connecting the past with present-day challenges.
